BirdDog Tech Talk: Exploring the Play, Play Pro, and O4 Outdoor PTZ Camera

Reliable video workflows demand tools that can adapt to a wide range of production environments, from straightforward AV distribution to complex outdoor broadcast setups. In a recent Tech Talk hosted by SFM’s Hugo Chevrette alongside Christian Frink from BirdDog, the conversation focused on three products designed to tackle exactly those challenges: the BirdDog Play, Play Pro, and the O4 outdoor PTZ camera.

The session offered a closer look at how BirdDog continues to evolve its ecosystem for modern IP video production, with practical features aimed at broadcasters, live event teams, education environments, houses of worship, and corporate AV users alike.

BirdDog Play vs. Play Pro

The discussion began with BirdDog’s decoder lineup, comparing the original BirdDog Play with the newer Play Pro.

The BirdDog Play has already established itself as a reliable NDI and SRT decoder-to-HDMI solution for simple video distribution tasks, return feeds, and remote production workflows using BirdDog Connect. It’s designed to be approachable and easy to deploy, making it a solid fit for users entering the world of IP video.

The Play Pro takes that foundation and expands it into a more robust professional solution. Built with an aircraft-grade aluminum chassis, the Play Pro introduces PoE support, quieter operation, and flexible mounting options that make it easier to integrate into permanent installations or demanding live production environments.

One of the standout additions to the Play Pro is NDI KVM support. By connecting a USB keyboard and mouse directly to the device, operators can remotely control systems like TriCasters over the network. For production teams managing equipment from another room, or even another building, this creates a much more streamlined workflow.

Another feature highlighted during the Tech Talk was Fast Switch, which enables near-instantaneous switching between NDI sources that share the same resolution and frame rate. In live production environments where smooth transitions matter, this can significantly improve the viewing experience while simplifying source management for operators.

Built for the Outdoors: BirdDog O4

The conversation then shifted outdoors with the BirdDog O4 PTZ camera, designed specifically for challenging environmental conditions.

The O4 features an IP66-rated design with a ruggedized build, watertight cable entry system, and heated front glass to prevent freezing in cold-weather deployments. Whether installed at sports venues, outdoor event spaces, campuses, or municipal locations, the camera is engineered to handle environments where standard PTZ cameras may struggle.

BirdDog has also refined the camera’s web interface, allowing users to view a full-screen live preview while simultaneously accessing camera controls. This makes setup and image adjustments more intuitive, especially for operators working remotely.

On the imaging side, the O4 offers detailed control over white balance, exposure, and color matrix settings, including direct Kelvin adjustments for precise color tuning. Low-light performance is further enhanced by an integrated 500-meter IR laser illuminator, enabling night vision capabilities for demanding outdoor applications.

One particularly interesting feature discussed in the session was Teleconvert. When operating in 1080p mode, the camera can crop the 4K sensor to effectively double its optical zoom range from 30x to 60x without the degradation typically associated with digital zoom. For applications requiring long-distance image capture, this can provide a major advantage.
